This page is designed to inspire a writers debate on alternative learning environments. Public schools are in a tail-spin, which means, a-one-system-for-all is not feasible. Society needs to realize all teenagers want to learn and recognize the fact that everyone cannot learn in passive classroom environments. Many students, labeled as failures, could excel if they had opportunity to learn with hands-on projects. In the right learning environment, anyone can excel. Its not the student that must change, the system must change. The system wants the student to change, because it does not want to change. If the system does not change or offer alternatives, an increasing number of teenagers will leave the system and become a burden on society. The media must promote this awareness.

=============================================== High School Dropouts Need Career Training The education system is based on a reward and punishment. "A" students get special privileges while failing student sit on the sidelines and watch. The problem is, 30% of high school students simply give up. No program or any amount of money is going to change that. Some of the 30% will join street gangs and end up in jail. There needs to be alternatives for failing students other than being threatened and rejected.

=============================================== Projects as an Education Tool Do teenagers fall through the cracks because classroom environments are out of tune with student interest? Captain Bob Webb seems to think so. He has been promoting Project Based Education in marine environments, including tall ships, for people in conflict with classroom environments. When education is built around projects, students understand what they are learning and why, they learn to research and apply knowledge in the real world. If classroom environments were designed around student interest, they would be motivated to learn. This is possible with Project Based Education. Projects require a goal where students must search for a method, acquire skills and knowledge, accept failure and bounce back from it, and keep trying until the goal is achieved. They learn through experiences, more import, they learn how to research and apply knowledge. Success is measure by the complexity of the project and the ability to finish it. This type of education motivates one to learn more about the world we live in while creating a lifetime love to learn. The laws' of nature is the motivator and instructor. Sample of Project Based Education aboard tall ships. "Ocean sailing is an educational platform where the curriculum is controlled by nature. The crew and ship must work in harmony with nature. When under way, there is the never-ending task of learning how the interaction of the vessel reacts with fluid dynamics and the atmosphere. The crew becomes comfortable with cause and effect, as well as persistence, endurance, patience, and courage; attitudes that are almost impossible to teach in a classroom." With the right project anyone can excel. Captain Bob is a Coast Guard licensed captain that has worked with teenagers aboard tall ships before moving to Goose Creek, SC, USA. Earlier this year he was working with the staff and at-risk students at Charleston Marine Institute at Patriots Point. Then in July, the school lost its sponsorship and was closed. Capt. Bob is now promoting a Self-Discovery School that could benefit teenagers who are in conflict with classroom environments. He has extensive information about student and workplace motivation at his website titled, "Motivation Tool Chest," found at www.motivation-tools.com. |

Category, Leadership and Motivation =============================================== The Motivation Tool Chestmotivation-tools.comLooking for workplace motivation tips? motivation-tools.com is a unique website that has extensive information on youth and workplace motivation concepts. These concepts are based on Captain Bob's 25 years with the Panama Canal Company, Panama. In Panama there was little opportunity for formal training, yet, the company has always been a leader in implementing advancing technology, attitudes carried over from the construction days. In 1905, John F. Stevens became the chief engineer and introduced empowered work environments, the little known secret that was the key to success during canal construction days and its operation. Capt. Bob says, "Empowered teams unites education with the workplace. The team acquires and shares knowledge for the purpose of finding the best way to complete tasks efficiently." The skills of empowered teams is developed through the art of self-education and the sharing of knowledge by bragging, socializing, conflict, debate, intuitive instincts, trial and error. This is the only way to adapt advance technology in isolated locations like Panama. Empowerment makes it possible to recognize natural talent, including people who can educate themselves, thereby, taking advantage of their skill. A leadership built on empowered teams continuously searches for a better way, which means, there is continuous opportunity. Opportunity is highly motivating for everyone. During the 95 year history of the Panama Canal Zone, all visitors have felt this highly charged super motivated environment. Capt. Bob is promoting Project Based Education for youth who fall through the cracks in academic classrooms. This is based on student empowerment where it becomes the student's responsibility to develop and research projects and develop a plan of action, not the instructor's. The instructor acts as a coach or facilitator. Capt. Bob believes that at-risk students can become empowerment leaders, because they refuse to accept the status quo that is typical in classrooms. Businesses need employees with this attitude if they want to implement empowerment programs. Sample of Project Based Education aboard tall ships. "A ship is a floating island that applies disciplinary learning. Learning and applying the maritime "rules of the road" are necessary for a smooth running organization. Navigation and piloting are important for math and chart reading skills. Crew members must weigh options, select a destination, figure out how to get there efficiently and safely, then DO IT? Ocean sailing presents real problems, that require real solutions, that can't be ignored. At sea, the results of the crews decisions are experienced NOW! And the reasons for the decision are understood NOW! There is no way to cheat, lie, or take shortcuts. Nature does not allow its laws to be broken. Crew members soon realize that successful decision making skills are based on the laws of nature." =============================================== Leadership Styles of the 21st Century Empowered team leadership is so efficient that young entrepreneurs will use it to upend old established organizations, including education. Organizations that depend on control will have to change or go out of business. If empowered teams are so efficient, why don't more organization use them? Empowerment is sharing responsibility. Leaders want control and this is more important than efficiency. So long as a profit can be made with control, organizations will use it. An example: K-Mart stores uses control and Wal-Mart stores uses empowerment. Team empowerment is Wal-Mart's secret weapon for putting their competitors out of business. Individuals inside K-Mart wants empowerment leadership, but leaders, as a group, won't allow it, they want control and want to maintain their comfort zone. 50 years from now, team empowerment will be standard leadership style and control will be something from the dark ages.
